Bennochy Community Garden Project
20th November 2016
Community Garden

You may have noticed that an orchard has been planted at the front of the church. This was planted last week with the help of pupils from Dunnikier Primary school. Our next project is to do some bulb art with other pupils from Dunnikier Primary on Thursday 24th November.

I am presently trying to resource some bulb planters and wondered if anyone had one in their shed or at the back of their cupboard, which they could let us borrow for this one off event. We are expecting a class of about 30 pupils and feel that purchasing 15 bulb planters to be left in a cupboard all year, would be uneconomical. If you do have a bulb planter which we could borrow, please label it, in order that we can return it to you. Planters can be left in the storage cupboard in the Methven Hall or handed in at the Olive Branch Café next Thursday morning.

Rev McAlpine and myself will be planting with the children from 1.30-2.45pm in the garden. If you are available and able to help us, as a one off, you will be made most welcome. Please contact either myself or Rev McAlpine. Dobbies Garden Centre, Dunfermline have donated boxes of daffodils and crocuses for the project. It will be exciting in the Spring as the flowers appear to the children's design!

Shoe Box Appeal Update
6th November 2016
Blythswood Care

A very big thank you to everyone who filled a shoebox or gave a donation. One hundred and five boxes were filled by the congregation of Bennochy Church and fifty one boxes were filled by the children of Dunnikier School. What a fantastic amount!

The practical gifts inside the shoeboxes bring joy, comfort and dignity to people in need and show that someone cares. After being checked our boxes will be going on their way to Hungary where they will be distributed to the poorest families whose only gift at Christmas will be a Shoebox filled by you and will give hope to someone in need. There will be smiles on many children's faces and thank you for being part of it.

We are now in the run up to the exams and graduation process, always a busy time (I am attempting to make cake for 250 people in my spare time!!). Faith in modern Scotland
9th October 2016
Faith in modern Scotland

What does it mean to be a Christian in the 21st century? How do we live a life of faith in a secular society? Just a couple of the questions people might ask themselves when considering what it means to be part of the church.

If you want to have a chat about these questions and lots of others, whether already a member of the church or not, and without any pressure of 'joining' the church, you are invited to join our minister, Robin, at The Steadings for a drink (of your choice!) on Thursday evening the 3rd of November at 7 pm. If you would like to come along, but this date is not suitable, please let Robin know.

If you know of anyone who might be considering church membership or just wants to know more about the Christian faith, please pass this invitation onto them. The more the better!

Summer Messy Church
26th June 2016
Messy Church

As the school term draws to close for another academic year and people are looking out their summer clothes for their holidays, Bennochy Messy Church team continue to plan sessions for families who are not going away this summer. However, a decision has been made not to hold our proposed Messy Church on Sunday 3rd July. Some of the team are on holiday and some are working.

The team is proposing to hold a ‘Messy Church, Picnic in the Park’ on Sunday 14th August. It has been suggested that we meet in Beveridge Park rather than the church hall due to the hall and toilets being out of commission during the summer.

As this will be a slightly different format from what we normally do, it may be an opportunity to invite friends along, to join in with the fun. Please can you let Louisa Turner, Development Worker, know if you are available and may attend such an event. This is purely for numbers and logistics. Thank you.

Wishing you all a relaxing and safe holiday this summer.

Update: Sunday, 14th August, 3 – 5.30 p.m. Meet at the white gazebo in the Peace Garden in the Beveridge Park at 3 p.m. for an afternoon of games and a picnic. For more information contact Louisa Turner, Development Worker, Telephone: 01383 729526

Returning to Choma
7th June 2016
Jenny Featherstone

We have received the following picture and news from our missionary partner, Jenny Featherstone.

I just wanted to say a special thank you to friends new and old, for the warm welcome I had when I was over in the UK this time. I have been fed, watered, bedded down, driven around and generally cosseted and given lots and lots of sea food - and in one case a new tooth to chomp it with :-)

It was really great to catch up with old friends and - yes, you haven't changed a bit; - and to make new ones/ meet people who I only previously knew by email. I will try to keep more regular contact in 2016 through newsletters, once I am back in Zambia.

One good bit of recent news is that our under 14 girls football team has been given the extra funding they need for their trip to the Gothia youth football world cup. Amazingly 5 of our play4all girls won a place on the team after taking part in a tournament in Lusaka in April, and now these girls who didn't even have a pair of football boots between them, (they had to borrow for the tournament) are off to Sweden in July.

Please pray that visas etc are obtained without a hitch.

once again, thank you for your prayers friendship and support.

Jane Racheal and some of the team / coaches after their win in Lusaka

Sequence Dance Club

A new Sequence Dance Club has now started in the Methven hall on the first friday of each month.

The very first Sequence Dance at Bennochy was held on Friday 4th March. We danced, and occasionally sang!, to tunes such as 'Edelweiss', 'The Dark Island' and 'On the Street Where You Live'. Dances ranged from beautiful waltzes to the more energetic cha cha. There was a short break at 3pm when tea/coffee and biscuits were served.

Sequence dancing is fun and suitable for all ages. It's is a great way to meet socially and make new friends. The health benefits associated with dancing are not just physical but emotional too. It's good for the memory as well!

Don't worry if you're a beginner. You'll get hints and tips from regular dancers and you will see yourself progress as time goes by. Please note that having a partner is not essential. Dances include the waltz, tango, rumba, blues, foxtrot, mambo, quickstep and more. You will find that there's always something to talk about...from the music played to the steps of the dances etc. Come along and join us! You will receive a warm welcome. All for just £2.00!

For more details contact Anne McIntyre on (01592) 265830. The next dance will be Friday 1st April at 2pm.

Lent - Prayers for Today’s Church
24th January 2016
Lent

The town centre churches are coming together during Lent to look at The Psalms – Prayers for Today’s Church. For maximum flexibility there will be 3 venues to attend at 3 different times of the week – you are not tied to a time or venue – whatever suits you best that week.

During Lent, many Christians think about the time that Jesus spent in the desert without anything to eat or drink. Lots of them give up something they enjoy or they reflect on the things they have and remember people who don’t have as much. Lent is a good time to take actions that make a difference for people all over the world. Christian Aid have supplied the following two factsheets for you to download:

The study will begin week beginning 13th February on the following dates:

  • Saturday 13th February: St Bryce Kirk @ 10 am
  • Sunday 14th February: Abbotshall Church @ 7 pm
  • Monday 15th February: Bennochy Church prayer room @ 2 pm
The theme for meeting one is Know that the Lord is God (Psalm 100).
